FM: Indian Economy is Fundamentally Strong and Forward Looking; MS Christine Lagarde,MD, IMF: Growth in India has picked up, even as the World Economy is Faced with Subdued Demand Conditions, Particularly in Europe and Japan, and Recent Slowdown in China

The Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley said that the Indian economy is fundamentally strong and forward looking. He elaborated the reforms under way and the commitment of the Government to accelerate growth while adhering to the path of fiscal discipline. The Union Finance Minister Shri Arun Jaitley was speaking during his meeting with Ms. Christine Lagarde, Managing Director, International Monetary Fund (IMF) here today. During the meeting, issues relating to the Indian and the global economy, key priorities of Government of India as well as issues relating to the IMF quota and governance reforms were discussed.

Dr. Arvind Subramanian appointed as Chief Economic Adviser

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr. Arvind Subramanian as Chief Economic Adviser for a period of 3 years on contract basis, in the pay scale of Rs. 80000/- (fixed) from the date of appointment or till superannuation, whichever is earlier.

Shri Arun Jaitley at the National Conference of State Tourism Ministers

Following is the Text of the Speech of the Union Finance and Defence Minister Shri Arun Jaitley at the National Conference of State Tourism Ministers here today:

“It is a very important occasion that we have all assembled here for the meeting of the State Tourism Ministers . If India is to grow, if Indian economy is to grow, tourism is certainly one of the low hanging fruits, which is more easily achievable. I have the least hesitation in saying that it is one of the underachieved sectors in India.

C&AG of India Takes Over as Member of UN Board of Auditors

The Comptroller & Auditor General of India today assumed office as Member of the United Nations Board of Auditors for a six year term upto June 2020. Shri Shashi Kant Sharma took over the charge of this prestigious position from Mr. Liu Jiayi, the Auditor General of the People’s Republic of China at the United Nations Headquarters at New York today. Shri Sharma was elected to this position defeating Philippines by a convincing margin of 62 votes in November 2013.
